Employees view their pension and change their contributions in the Kota app, without emailing HR.

  • Admin

    No new process to learn

Kota handles enrolments, contribution changes and provider updates, so your team doesn’t have to master a second system.

Aboutauto-enrolment

What is auto-enrolment?
Ireland’s government retirement savings scheme, My Future Fund. Since 1 January 2026, eligible employees without a pension through payroll are enrolled automatically. Employee and employer each pay 1.5% of gross pay to start, and the State adds 0.5%. Rates rise every three years, reaching 6% each from year 10.
Who gets enrolled?
Employees aged 23 to 60, earning €20,000 or more a year across all their jobs, who aren’t paying into a pension through payroll. NAERSA, the body that runs the scheme, works this out from Revenue payroll data. Employees outside those limits can opt in.

Government scheme oryour own pension?

How My Future Fund compares with an occupational pension run through Kota.

  • Fixed or flexible

    Contributions

My Future Fund sets the rates by law, starting at 1.5% each. With your own scheme, you set the employer rate.

  • AVCs

    Top-ups

My Future Fund has no additional voluntary contributions. In an occupational pension, employees can top up through payroll.

  • Retirement age

    Access

My Future Fund pays out from State Pension age, currently 66. Occupational pensions pay out at the retirement age set in the scheme rules.

  • Who owns it

    Experience

My Future Fund runs through a government portal. Your own scheme sits in the Kota app, next to the rest of your benefits.

  • Who runs it

    Admin

With your own scheme in Kota, enrolments and contribution changes sync automatically from your HRIS.

Kota sources the providers and agrees the terms, so you don’t have to.

What doesauto-enrolment cost?

Under My Future Fund, the employer rate rises every three years. Here’s what shapes the cost:

  1. 01

    The contribution phase

Employers pay 1.5% of gross pay in years 1 to 3, then 3%, 4.5% and finally 6% from year 10, matching the employee.

  2. 02

    The earnings cap

Contributions apply to gross pay up to €80,000 a year. Pay above that isn’t counted.

  3. 03

    Who’s eligible

Employees aged 23 to 60 earning €20,000 or more, with no pension through payroll. Others can opt in, and you match them too.

  4. 04

    Opt-outs and suspensions

If an employee opts out or suspends their contributions, your employer contribution stops as well.

Example scenario

An employee earns €45,000. In years 1 to 3 of My Future Fund, you pay 1.5%, or €675 a year, and so do they. From year 10 you’d pay 6%, or €2,700 a year. With your own scheme you set the rate, as long as combined contributions reach at least 3.5% of gross pay, with at least 1.5% from you.

Illustrative only.

Auto-enrolment in Ireland and the UK

Ireland

My Future Fund started on 1 January 2026 and is run by NAERSA. Employees aren’t enrolled if they’re in a pension through payroll that meets minimum standards: for a defined contribution scheme, at least 3.5% of gross pay in total, including 1.5% from the employer. In Ireland, Kota works with several pension providers, including Irish Life and Zurich.

United Kingdom

Auto-enrolment has applied since 2012. Employers enrol eligible workers into a qualifying scheme and pay at least 3% of qualifying earnings, with 8% the minimum in total. Kota’s UK scheme with Smart Pension is set up to meet these requirements.

“To make sure they’re exempt from Auto Enrolment, employers will need to make sure they’re contributing for all employees from the day they’re hired.”

Frequentlyasked questions

Who runs auto-enrolment?
NAERSA, the National Automatic Enrolment Retirement Savings Authority. It enrols eligible employees, collects contributions and invests the savings. Employers register and pay through the My Future Fund portal using their ROS details.
How does NAERSA know who to enrol?
It uses Revenue payroll data to check each employee’s age, earnings and whether they’re already paying into a pension through payroll.
What if we already have a company pension?
Employees in a pension run through payroll aren’t enrolled if it meets the minimum standards. For a defined contribution scheme, that’s at least 3.5% of gross pay in total, with at least 1.5% from you. Anyone your scheme doesn’t cover can still be enrolled.
Can employees opt out?
Yes. Employees can opt out during a two-month window after six months of membership, or suspend their contributions. Anyone who opts out is re-enrolled after two years if they’re still eligible.
Can employees who aren’t eligible join?
Yes. Employees earning under €20,000, or aged under 23 or over 60, can opt in if they’re not already in a pension through payroll. You match their contributions like anyone else’s.
Can Kota choose the option for us?
No. Kota is a non-advised broker. We set up and run your scheme, and give you the information to make your own decision.
